The Women’s Touch

Read: Exodus 38:1–8
He made the basin of bronze and its stand of bronze, from the mirrors of the ministering women. (v. 8)

A feminine sacrifice brightens a repetitive account. For a time all the measuring, molding, and fitting ceased as the women placed their mirrors on the heap destined to become a laver. They had heard the call for bronze and responded. They knew that true beauty isn’t dependent upon mirrors.
We ponder over Bible passages like this one. It bogs us down with detail. Can we make any application to our own situations from it? We are impressed by the fastidious selection of materials and workmen. And we are struck once more with the significance of the tabernacle that closeted Israel’s heartbeat. The Israelites’ very pulse depended upon this portable church, for therein dwelt the Spirit of God, the one source of strength and hope in a hostile world. At one point in its construction Moses had to restrain them from giving, “for the material they had was sufficient . . . and more” (Exod. 36:7).
Through the labyrinth of this account we see God more clearly as the author of order and perfection. God is concerned about details. We rejoice that we have the privilege of being temples and that the Spirit of God dwells in us (1 Cor. 3:16). We thank God that we are under the new covenant and that “pure before the law we stand.” (originally published September 8, 1968)

Prayer:
Father, implant within us a keen desire to be detail-conscious in our programs. Amen.
